Ruth Philo (2018) 'WAITING ROOMS'

Ruth’s paintings explore our relationship with the spaces that we inhabit and rooms that we experience over time. Waiting Rooms – sometimes we wait in them and sometimes they wait for us! Combining the physical and the metaphysical, Ruth’s work conveys a sensory experience, whilst also being concerned with the materiality of the paint and process. Pigments are often hand ground, built up in layers with a variety of mediums over a graphite ground, then pared down through sanding and wiping to reveal their archaeologies.

Ruth lives and works in Sudbury, Suffolk. She has an MA in Fine Art from Norwich University of the Arts and a BA in History of Art from the University of Warwick. Her work has been exhibited in the UK, US, Europe and China, and is held in several collections. She has had work selected for the Jerwood Drawing Prize and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and is a member of the artist-led group Contemporary British Painting.
