Jane Watt (2020) 'WASH MY HANDS'

Projection, stainless steel sink.

Wash my Hands was made in May 2020 when we were nearing the end of the first lockdown in the UK. Acute attention was given to the daily routine of washing hands through government information posters, and instructions to wash as long as it takes you to sing Happy Birthday twice. This necessary decontamination act became more potent and self-conscious. Surgeons scrub in and scrub out, paying close attention to every inch of their hands. Here the self-cleansing motion of hand on hand becomes hypnotic with the rhythm of hands and movement of water.

Jane Watt is based in Suffolk, and has made site-specific work in rural and urban locations for over 25 years. She is Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at University of Suffolk, and has worked with The Art Station for 5 years.
