Anna Mac (2021) 'INSIDE OUT' and 'ME MYSELF AND I'

Her two pieces are from a body of work developed during the pandemic. They explore who we are as individuals during a surreal and difficult period of time. Self reflection is something we may do either too little, or too much of.  As an artist, Anna often spends a lot of time sitting and reflecting on her work and her practice; the pieces in this exhibition give her a sense of familiarity and calmness. In both ‘Inside Out’ and ‘Me, Myself and I’, she invites the viewer to visualise themselves sitting in the chair. Who really is the person looking back? Often the reflection of the chair is only partially visible, suggesting that perhaps we don’t always see who we really are or even hide parts of ourselves. Anna often plays with shadows in her work, as shown in ‘Inside Out’, which hints perhaps at the thoughts left behinds by the reflector sat in the chair. Her work is formed using simple blocks of colour and she rarely goes into detail; with unnecessary detail omitted, this allows the colours of light and shadow to be emphasised.

Anna Mac (b.1986) is a British contemporary artist currently based in Suffolk. Heavily inspired by colour and how colour converses with not only other colours, but also the viewer. Anna explores simple lines and shapes in her surroundings, breaking down the detail into blocks of colour.
