In September and October 2024, Art Station offered 3 free community river walks, stopping at highlights along the river Fromus which runs through Saxmundham. We were joined by experts talking about wildlife, the river, and completed creative activities along the way.
Led by artist and gardener Jevan Watkins Jones, and local environmental experts, including Prof Peter Hobson, Katie Fairhurst (RSPB) and Blue Spaces Saxmundham, to discover the river Fromus. A bus took us to beautiful areas along the river route, where we walked, created, and learned more about these vital habitats.
Dates:
Saturday 14th September, 10:30 am – 1:30 pm – Joined by Katie Fairhurst (RSPB). Going downriver – Starting at the Fromus in Saxmundham in Art Station’s Old Bank garden, then on to the Wadd at Benhall – a protected marshland site, finishing at the RSPB reserve at Snape.
Sunday 29th September, 2:00 – 4:30 pm – Going North – starting at the source at Rotten End, then Dorley’s corner – Suffolk Flora Reservation Trust Reserve.
Saturday 12th October, 10:30 – 1:30 pm – in Partnership with Blue Spaces Saxmundham, joined by Prof Peter Hobson.
“I think it’s really interesting to find different places, even if you live in an area, that you wouldn’t naturally come to, and explore. This has been fascinating. Just such interesting and lovely facts and poems, just beautiful. And I think my son, who is eight, has really enjoyed it because he’s been engaged the whole day”.
“Thank you for Saturday’s adventure. So well organised, informative and fun. A great opportunity to find out more about the river, and the work to prevent flooding while creating spaces for nature to thrive. I’m not typically artistic and wasn’t looking forward to the creative aspect, but really enjoyed the wad painting and the charcoal sketching. I might be converted!”
Our River Walks are made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to offer these walks as part of our river project, River Fromus, our river, our past, our future. Thanks also to Grocer’s Charity for funding towards the Old Bank Garden project.
In partnership with Blue Spaces Saxmundham.
