Arboreal by Emily Richardson

Arboreal by Emily Richardson: A three-screen film installation capturing an historic oak woodland in Suffolk.

Emily Richardson is a filmmaker whose work addresses ideas about our relationship to and impact on natural and constructed landscapes and environments.

Arboreal, 2023, captures aspects of the sculptural forms left by ancient oaks in a Suffolk woodland. Experience the forest in this immersive, three screen installation, through organic sounds and the captivating presence of this historic woodland.

Originally conceived as a piece for Orchestra of the Earth’s performance of Elgar’s Cello Concerto at the Milton Keynes International Festival MKIF in 2022, Arboreal was reimagined as an installation piece and setting for a dance choreographed and performed by Edgefield Dance Company for The Art Station’s Winter Celebration in December, 2023.

Richardson’s films have been shown in galleries, museums and festivals internationally including Tate Modern and Tate Britain, London, Pompidou Centre, Paris, Barbican Cinema, London; Anthology Film Archives, New York and Venice, Edinburgh, BFI London, Rotterdam and New York Film Festivals.
